Orios’s #Misfits program, first launched in 2018 has been re-designed basis feedback received from over 1800 entrepreneurs on the recently tweeted and posted a survey called ‘What #Misfits Want’. The survey is a first for any VC fund in India to understand what Indian entrepreneurs want from their investors in the pre- and post-investment phases.
From the responses received from the ‘What #Misfits Want’ survey, the top three asks for startup founders are – seeking advice on raising the next round of funding, scaling up the business and, hiring right. Advice from successful founders is especially valued by current founders. Founders also want India specific guidance and do not wish to spend time travelling out of the country and away from their businesses for days together.

Commenting on the launch of the #Misfits Cohort 3, Anup Jain, Managing Partner at Orios Venture Partners said, “India’s growing startup ecosystem has changed on its expectations from VCs over the last 10 years since the birth of the first wave of unicorns. Today’s startup founders demand more than just funds from investors. With insights from our survey, we realise that while initial seed fundraise is an important aspect, there is much more that entrepreneurs are struggling on. Our Misfits 3.0 program focuses exactly on providing support in the Top 3 areas that concern startup founders the way they want it!”
Some highlights from the survey and what the boot camps will cover as part of the Cohort 3:
- How to decode the Fund-raising Process : According to the survey, building conviction with prospective investors, understanding of overall strategy for fundraising and the process of approaching investors are top concerns for founders. 58% of first-time entrepreneurs in the survey have highlighted that prolonged response time while connecting with the right investor is an area of concern. This was followed by non-clarity on fund mandate (49%) and partner availability (46%). For serial entrepreneurs and seed-stage entrepreneurs, prolonged response time taken by investors is a standing issue. The Bootcamp on Fundraising will cover all of these areas. Orios will then facilitate face to face meetings for the cohort with follow on investors.
- Scaling up the Business : This Bootcamp will cover areas like marketing, customer acquisition, retention, organic vs inorganic growth, digital marketing, B2B2C acquisition channels – pros and cons amongst many others. As per the survey, seasoned entrepreneurs appreciate help from their investors in the course of expansion in terms of product or service expansion (42%). Interestingly, first-time entrepreneurs also consult their investors to help them with product-market-fit (32%). This boot camp will be conducted by senior founders and VCs
- Hiring Right: This boot camp will cover how to expand the team right at the right time as well as ensuring culture fitment, motivating ground ops, onboarding senior talent and creating multiple levels to drive performance. This camp will be conducted by senior HR professionals and startup founders. Orios will also facilitate engagement with specialised talent search firms.
